I stumbled upon this quote from Hagel today:
“You are…nothing but unconscious instruments of the men of thought.”
It made me think of, of course, advertising.
Doesn’t it just sum up the whole idea of advertising that works?
This reminds me of a research I did for class last year on mass media.
Mass media plays an important role in influencing the public opinion on almost any topic. Lippmann (1922) noted in the first chapter “The World Outside and the Pictures in Our Heads” of his book Public Opinion that the mass media is the primary source of the pictures in our heads about the outside world—not only the shape and color of the pictures but even what the pictures are about—for the public receives only the news and knowledge the media chooses to tell them.
I know it’s just common sense. Everyone knows that.
But hey, doesn’t it sound scary as well? It does to me.
